Candidate Overview

Over the last five years the Strand Aldwych has transformed from one of the capital’s most congested and polluted streets, the Aldwych gyratory, to a new civic place. The scheme links some of the capital’s important cultural and educational centres by establishing a new space that neighbouring institutions, such as King’s College London, the London School of Economics, Somerset House, and The Courtauld Institute, can interact in and share for art, performances and events.

This is an exemplar great street that provides good practice examples of consultation, implementation and ongoing management. The assessors believe this achievement should be celebrated as a learning experience and applied to other areas in the City of Westminster that are being proposed for pedestrianisation.
