Candidate Overview

Reggio Emilia clearly deserves to be a front runner in this year’s European City of the Year awards. It is a well-functioning city which puts its inhabitants first.

Over the years it has implemented a strong social security system delivered by its strong cooperative and community sector. It has worked and is working on transport solutions to reduce car use, is very innovative in commercial and social aspects, and provides adequate and sufficient housing for its inhabitants. The city radiates a feeling of being cohesive and inclusive.

Furthermore, it works actively with other bodies, including the EU, on the challenge of our times: climate change and how to reach Carbon Neutrality by 2030. All implementations are done in a participatory way and very effectively.
