Candidate overview

The regeneration of Mayfield represents one of the latest chapters in central Manchester’s ongoing urban transformation.

Delivered through a public private partnership, the Mayfield Park project shines in terms of its sustainable design credentials and offers a strong example of the remediation and repurposing of former industrial land.

The de-culverting and the enhancement of the River Medlock has been central to the design approach. This will reduce flood risk along the river catchment and ensure climate resilience, also providing valuable flood attenuation in a densely developed urban area. The landscape design has introduced a diverse mix of tree and plant species bringing enhancement to ecology and biodiversity.

Depot Mayfield and Freight Island have established popular ‘meanwhile’ uses, offering a cultural destination which complements the operation of the park and provides an imaginative re-use for a complex of former industrial buildings.

These are generating interest and footfall in advance of wider redevelopment. The initial public investment made in infrastructure and green space these has created positive conditions for future development.
