Candidate Overview

The street section the assessors considered runs east / west, between Stoke Newington High Street and the Town Hall, which is approximately 700 metres in length. Church Street, as it is experienced today, is a result of London Borough of Hackney’s Councillors and Officers strong support and will to implement and evolve the low traffic neighbourhood along Church Street in Stoke Newington. Along with extensive community and stakeholder consultation.

As part of the low traffic neighbourhood proposal a bus gate was positioned between Lordship Road and Marton Road. The bus gate, along with further interventions along the street such as widening of pavements, new Parklets and links with areas of surrounding open space, has helped to physically and visually reduce the dominance of motor vehicles along the street.

Positively the interventions have led to an increase in walking and cycling through the area, with bikes now significantly outnumbering cars. Importantly the ripple effect of displaced vehicles has not led to any additional issues within the surrounding road network.

The street’s interventions and design are evolving because of continued monitoring and consultation, allowing the London Borough of Hackney’s Officers to react to changing circumstances along the street and the wider area. The assessors welcomed the London Borough of Hackney’s Officers working with local businesses to further support Church Street as a ‘20 minute neighbourhood’ to enable the community to access local shops and services.
