Cities are not islands. They rely on their regional hinterland, and the surrounding region depends on the collective energy of the city at its heart. The relationship between a city and the land around it, from the fields of livestock and produce to the villages and towns that usually house many of the people who power the city, means a constant balance needs striking. Achieving this balance is especially acute in areas of rapid growth. Where do all the new residents live? How do they move around in ways that avoid sprawl and support increasingly urgent climate change agendas?

This Workshop will look at cities across Europe, including potentially surprising ones close to home, leading the way in achieving a coordinated and coherent approach to regional planning. It will draw on the experience of third-sector and development professionals to investigate the blueprint for new approaches and examine where else offers inspiration.

Presenters: Sue Riddlestone, Founder, BioRegional; Martyn Evans, Creative Director, LandsecU+I; and Tom Perry, Director, LDA, & Cambridge Studio Lead
