Our first Great Place Urbanism Awards since 2019, and we're back with a bang to celebrate with an event that will continue the learning beyond the shortlist, at London City Island and the English National Ballet's Mulryan Centre for Dance.

Starting with 'backstage' site tours led by the architect; followed by our Learning from Europe session with European City finalists; plenty of opportunities to network over some food and drinks; all before we crown our finalists for 2022!

And the cherry on top, we'll have Poet-in-Residence Ian McMillan with us to read the 15 poems he has written for our finalists.

Event programme

13:00 - Walking tour with the architects
A unique ‘behind-the-scenes’ look at London City Island with Glenn Howells Architects.

There will be several tour groups, departing at staggered intervals to avoid overcrowding - you will be asked to select a slot when booking. During this time there will be refreshments back at the ENB Mulryan Centre for Dance for anyone waiting for or returning from their tour.

15:00 - Learning from Europe: Málaga, Mechelen, and Trieste
An opportunity to hear from this year's three European City finalists on what their cities are doing or have done to earn themselves a nomination! Followed by a Q&A.

16:30 - Ceremony opening drinks
A chance to eat, drink, and be merry with new and old friends.

17:45 - The Urbanism Awards with poems from Ian McMillan
Time to crown our European City of the Year, Great Town or Small City, Great Neighbourhood, Great Street, and Great Place! Each category will be introduced by Ian McMillan reading the three finalists’ poems.

19:15 - Drinks and dinner
Stick around after the ceremony for drinks and an informal dinner.

Certificates of attendance will be available on request.

Why London City Island?

Many guests, including most of this year’s finalists, will be joining us from outside of London – in many cases crossing borders to come and celebrate – so why not make the most of the trip and explore an interesting piece of the city’s urbanism?
