The Urbanism Hours are virtual lunch time events that explore a given theme within the built environment, with two speakers and a Q&A discussion.
May's Urbanism Hour will look at the role and impact of the European Commission on urbanism in Europe. With speakers Alice Charles, Arup, and Julio Lumbreras, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.
Alice Charles
Alice is Global Leader for Arup’s Global Strategic Partnerships with a number of international organisations, Mayoral Networks and Foundations including the World Economic Forum, UN High Level Champions, UN Global Compact, C40, Resilient Cities Network, World Green Building Council, World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Earthshot, Stockholm International Water Institute and Resilience Rising. She is also a Director for Cities, Planning & Design in Arup, where she focuses on cross cutting urban strategies (sustainability, climate change, resilience, mobility) in Europe & globally. She has more than 20 years’ experience working for the private & public sector in the areas of city & urban planning, real estate, urban development & regeneration, construction, infrastructure, transport, energy, climate change globally.
Julio Lumbreras
Julio Lumbreras, PhD, Eng, MPA is Professor at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) and teaching at Harvard University, where he is the instructor of the course on “Sustainable Cities”. He was a member of the Board of the European Mission for “Climate-neutral and smart cities”. He is now part of the Net Zero Cities consortium, and he is coordinating the multi-stakeholder platform for the implementation of the mission in Spain (citiES 2030). He is founding associate editor in the Open Access Journal on Frontiers in Sustainable Cities. He is co-author of more than 80 papers and books on air quality, climate change, sustainable cities, and Higher Education. Julio is passionate about increasing sustainability in higher education, turning universities into key agents to systemically transform cities towards sustainability.
