The European City of the Year 2024
Helsinki, Finland
The Finnish capital, Helsinki is a key hub for politics, education, finance, culture, and research, with social policies a priority in the city. Particular attention is paid to housing and community well-being, and there is no housing shortage. Harking back to its original neoclassical plan, the city emphasises low-rise, human-scale development to this day. Helsinki aims for carbon neutrality by 2030 and is well on its way to this goal, with high usage of public transit and the recent closure of the Hanasaari coal plant.
Other finalists in this category: Bristol, England and Reggio Emilia, Italy
The Great Town / Small City 2024
Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Shrewsbury, the County town of Shropshire, owes much of its character to its history in the wool trade and Industrial Revolution. The Town Council plays a proactive role in urban and economic planning, collaborating with Shropshire Council to achieve shared goals. A successful example is the repurposed 1960s indoor market, blending retail and services with no vacancies. A sustainable flood risk management strategy is in place, and the Shrewsbury Moves initiative aims to reduce car dependency, freeing space for town centre activities.
Other finalists in this category: Bath, Somerset and Lewes, Sussex
The Great Neighbourhood 2024
Beaulieu, Chelmsford
Beaulieu's development has been guided by a shared vision from developers, Chelmsford Council, and stakeholders, ensuring alignment with the city’s Local Area Action Plan. This includes diverse travel options, sustainable housing, and community-driven design. A key feature is the early delivery of Beaulieu Square, a vibrant neighbourhood hub with shops, schools, and community spaces, which encourages interaction and sustainable travel. With 176 acres of public open space and strong emphasis on landscape, Beaulieu has earned a Green Flag Award. Initiatives like free bus travel for new residents, bike maintenance, and e-scooter trials support sustainability and mobility.
Other finalists in this category: Graylingwell, Chichester and Port Loop, Birmingham
The Great Street 2024
Strand Aldwych, Westminster
Over the last five years, Strand Aldwych has transformed from a congested, polluted street into a vibrant civic space, connecting cultural and educational landmarks like King’s College London, LSE, Somerset House, and the Courtauld Institute. The project is a model for consultation, implementation, and management, serving as a valuable learning experience for other pedestrianisation efforts in Westminster. Extensive stakeholder engagement has enriched the design, enhancing both public interaction and the historic architecture. Thoughtful planting and distinctive street furniture create a unique identity and year-round appeal.
Other finalists in this category: Church Street, Stoke Newington and Old York Road, Wandsworth
The Great Place 2024
Union Terrace Gardens, Aberdeen
The regeneration of Union Terrace Gardens has transformed a neglected heritage site into a revitalised city centre space. Despite differing opinions on the design, the City Council played a central role in delivery, offering new vision, continuity, and political support after previous setbacks. The project team collaborated with numerous stakeholders to create a people-centred design that maximises the gardens' potential for all users. The contemporary design enhances the heritage of the space and has already boosted city confidence. Additionally, the project aligns with broader initiatives, including the Aberdeen City Centre and Beach Masterplan.
