This summer, once we've launched the AoU's 20th anniversary year at Congress in Utrecht, we're running a programme of walking tours and visits across the UK and Ireland. These kinds of visits provide a really great opportunity to bring together urbanists locally in a range of locations. But we need your help!

Submit an idea

AoU Members are invited to submit an idea for a tour exploring alternative, interesting, or just plain great urbanism by foot. Visits will take place between July and September.

We welcome ideas of all descriptions – and here are a few categories if you need inspiration:

  • Architectural: e.g. walking tours visiting buildings from a particular architectural style or movement
  • Arts + Media: e.g. walking tours based on a musical artist / genre or a TV show / film
  • Industry: e.g. walking tours exploring the influence or presence of a given industry in a town or city
  • Retrofit + Re-use: e.g. walking tours exploring sites that have been reimagined / reborn from dereliction
  • Trips Down Memory Lane: e.g. walking tours set in previous Urbanism Awards finalists or other significant AoU locations

Deadline for submissions: Friday 30 May 2025

Why a Summer of Walking?

Most years our programme during the summer months is led by the Urbanism Awards assessment visits, which provide an intimate, informal opportunity for our community of urbanists to get together in locations across the UK and Europe, and explore a place with the people who know it best.

This year we don't have the awards, so we want to maintain this element of AoU activity through a different lens. And 2025/26 represents the Academy's 20th anniversary, so it's a great time to get involved by organising a tour in a place you know and love.

How to submit

Once you've read the submission brief, use the form linked here or below to share your idea. For more info please write to Connie at [email protected]
